Canabalt was one of those games I had seen one of my co-workers playing out of the corner of my eye a few weeks back. It looked interesting, but not enough to pull me in. (UPDATE: I’ve since swung by Adam Atomic to check it out. Turns out it’s much easier than Canabalt for the iPhone)
Fast forward a few weeks and what do I see in the App Store? Canabalt. Now that I can put it in my pocket for the long ride home, it’s time to give it a try.
The game itself is about as simple as a game can be. The game play is classic side-scroller where your job is to keep yourself alive by leaping over gaps between buildings. You also encounter various obstacles along the way. Some you should jump over (missiles that fall from the sky) while others may or may not be good to clear. The longer you stay alive, the faster the screen scrolls – making it harder and harder to time your building jumps. As such, it can be a good idea to run into some obstacles as they slow things down.
All in all the game is a lot of fun to play and very well designed for what it is…a classic 8-bit side scroller. Canabalt offers great mindless game play that tests your reflex ability big time. We highly recommend it. If you want a taste of what you’ll get, you can play Canabalt online for free! Bear in mind, the iPhone version of Canabalt is a bit more tricky…
